In the (illustrated) story, he wears the cucumber/watermelon as a hat thing which is gloriously bizarre and oddly cute. I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out where I could get a large enough balloon to papier-mache it, or could I cobble balloons together, etc. HOWEVER, your idea for dressing up as a cucumber/watermelon, point blank, is an AWESOME one.
