Never underestimate what the last 4 decades have done to turn public education into an anxiety guilt terror riden ordeal for both parents and kids.
It didn't used to be this way, honestly.
Where I grew up, on a farm, there wasn't even kindergarden for us. We were just enrolled in the first grade, along with some medical things ahead of time, which most parents would have done anyway -- innoculations and so on.
I could do the alphabet and write my name and read a little, due to being the first child, and mom having been a teacher for 3 years before marrying. And most of all, because these things came easily to me. I was always a good student in everything -- except geometry and physics and chemistry -- merely by virtue of nothing. (Made me lazy it did.)
But now, what parents and their kids have to go through is just -- insane.
