I'm trying to remember where it was - it must have been later than early modern, possibly even into the era of early oral history collecting - anecdote of the young woman who was perfectly literate or at least capable of signing her name, who nonetheless made her mark on the register when getting wed, so as not to shame her less-literate new husband.
