I have black hair and dark eyes, although I'm white. Little old ladies in the Mission insist on speaking Spanish to me and get mad when I tell them I can't speak Spanish or they don't believe me. Sometimes the only way to get people to stop assuming I speak or at least understand Spanish is to speak Japanese to them, because that satisfies their assumption that I am really from somewhere else.
