Failing that, we once thrifted, during a very dry winter with our old heater, a couple of Crock Pots and kept them running on low for a few days until the worst passed off.
Also useful as cheap not-humidifiers: buying a fabric shower curtain and letting it dry out on its own every day. No, really, works like a charm for us.
