I have black hair and dark eyes, although I'm white. Little old ladies in the Mission insist on speaking Spanish to me and get mad when I tell them I can't speak Spanish or they don't believe me. Sometimes the only way to get people to stop assuming I speak or at least understand Spanish is to speak Japanese to them, because that satisfies their assumption that I am really from somewhere else.
Dude, this is San Francisco, everyone's from somewhere else, but I'm from West Virginia, we speak English there, even if it doesn't sound right to some of y'all.
