I live half a block away from what seems like a really decent corner store. And it has great fresh meat of a wide variety, including whole pig heads, and it has cheap eggs and milk.
But the canned goods are expensive, dry goods other than rice and Hispanic stuff (beans, Abuelita chocolate, etc) are really expensive, frozen stuff is all BAD (has thawed and refrozen, is freezer burnt) and expensive, fresh produce tends to be rotten in the middle or very, very bruised, canned goods are expensive... I can't even buy bread there any more because it went from going moldy a few days after I bought it, to one trip where every single loaf of bread in the store was moldy. All of it. So I have to go to a chain grocery store that's several miles away, and I do not have a car.
My husband does, but he works during the day.
I see people online talking about getting a bag of frozen veg for $.88. I have never seen that, even generic veg. It's all at least $1, usually closer to $1.60 or more.
