This could be pertussis, but it could also be reactive airway disease, and I'd bet on that one because I think you'd have a fever if you had pertussis.
There is totally a pertussis epidemic everyfuckingwhere right now, and I can't believe that information isn't being shouted from the rooftops; I've been working in hospitals for over 10 years and you know how I found out about it? One of the docs I worked for at my last job casually asked me if I got my free DTAP shot (because we work in a hospital) yet, because I totally have asthma and pertussis would kill me. Not, you know, my own doctor who should be on top of this, but basically a co-worker.
But reactive airway disease is where your lungs get oversensitive during a respiratory infection and you keep coughing for weeks or months after the illness, and it's treated with steroidal inhalers. I have asthma and I get it every time I have a cold. It sucks ass, but it's not pertussis. And it can totally make you cough so hard you piss yourself and use up boxes and boxes of tissues.
(I got my DTAP, needless to say, within the week.)
