Niko was very quiet the other day, except for a faint rustling.

I knew that was a bad sign.

In older kids, being very quiet is a bad sign because it means they are trying not to attract attention. In younger kids, being very quiet is a bad sign because it means they are focusing very hard on something.

I went to investigate, following the soft rustling sounds into the kitchen, where I did not see Niko.

I did not see him because he was hiding.

Our kitchen counters are set up in an L shape. When you stand at the sink, the other leg of the counter is to your right. There’s a low cabinet door that opens outward, which means a small child could easily drag his blanket over there, open the door, and cuddle up on the floor chillaxin’ and hidden on three sides (sink/cabinets, cabinet, cabinet door) while he munched on barbecued potato chips he’d pulled off the counter.

I’m not sure if he was hiding because he just likes to find out of the way places and chill there, or if he knew he wasn’t supposed to eat those chips and wanted privacy to do so before being found out and having them taken away, or he just likes sitting in that corner, or what. But it looked pretty planned out, what with his blanket and all.

He was less than pleased when I confiscated the chips.
